A design studio handcrafting lights, made from sustainable materials like handmade paper, quarry dust and cork waste, for commissioned spaces and projects.
Most sustainable-lighting brands start with the design and go looking for an eco-friendly material to build it in. Oorjaa ran the process backward. Jenny Pinto opened Bangalore's first handmade paper studio in 1998, working with banana fibre pulled from agricultural waste, and only later realised the paper's translucence made it work as a lampshade. The studio became a lighting brand almost by accident, now run in partnership with Radeesh Shetty of The Purple Turtles.
Best for: anyone furnishing a space that can carry a genuine design statement, and buyers who'd rather their "eco-friendly" purchase have an actual material story behind it than a green label on the box.
